No Red m&ms for Halloween?
It's that time of year for Halloween candy production. Manufacturers use glass lined reactors to maintain product purity while producing food colorants. One such plant called GTI after finding contamination with no apparent cause. Our team was on site the next day.
Technicians used a coating thickness gauge to take non-destructive measurements, conduct statistical analysis and map the glass thickness. Spark testing uncovered a damaged area on the bottom head which was repaired with a 3" tantalum repair plug.
Service work performed in the FDA approved facility adhered to the No Contamination Policy. Our technicians wore special clothing including hairnets and worked with tools that had been cleaned and approved for service in this vessel. The repair was completed within a few hours and the reactor was back in service making the color red.vessel steel.
